Is it “to make a bridge?” It sounds funny, doesn’t it? You don’t make bridge, but you build it instead.
One great example is the date “December 7, 2015″ which is “puente” as you call it. It falls the day before the holiday “December 8, 2015.”
December 8 falls on Tuesday. When a public holiday in Spain falls on Tuesday, it is a common practice for employers to make Monday as well and to give everyone a four-day weekend. This is known as hacer puente. In English, we call it “a long weekend.”
